Developed in partnership with the Conservatoire du littoral on Île de Groix, this project sought to restore and reinterpret the identity of the Bas Grognon and Haut Grognon fort batteries, together with the semaphore that completes the site’s defensive ensemble.
Set within the striking landscape of the island, the project draws from the surrounding fauna and flora, as well as from the site’s constantly shifting natural forces, the sea, wind, and rain, whose interaction generates a singular natural melody. This sensorial condition inspired the creation of an experimental environment in which music becomes the central protagonist.
The design approach focused on generating forms that emerge directly from the site: in situ interventions that preserve the raw and untamed character of this historically charged landscape. Rather than imposing an autonomous object, the proposal introduces a musical journey that activates the existing fort structures through the island’s elemental forces, reanimating the different building ensembles and creating the sensation of moving inside an instrument.
The project establishes a dynamic environment in which visitors become both observers of a melodic spectacle and, in designated spaces, active participants placed at the origin of the experience itself. Through this immersive atmosphere, the fort is reimagined as an accessible and attractive destination for all ages, inviting discovery of one of the region’s historic strongholds through a soft, atmospheric, and contemplative musical experience.
The proposal also integrates a strong event-based dimension. As the seasons shift and weather conditions evolve, the auditory and visual experience transforms with them, turning the site into a landscape to be rediscovered throughout the year. To further reinforce the project’s musical universe, the intervention introduces an informal, deconstructed concert space through freely accessible stepped seating, capable of hosting artists and transforming the island into a cultural destination for visitors from around the world.
